Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Hosted End-of-Year Community Briefing

Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Hosted End-of-Year Community Briefing

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office held a community briefing to provide key public safety updates to Cobb residents and community leaders. 

Sheriff Craig Owens officially swore in the Mounted Patrol Unit horses; Duke (May 2022), Diesel (May 2022), Misty (April 2023), Major (April 2023), Apollo (July 2023), Dusty (July 2023), and Gucci (October 2023) before the community briefing began. 

Topics discussed were the latest frauds and scams to look out for, programs within the jail, and employment opportunities. 

Featured presenters at the community briefing included members of the Command Staff who touched on the following topics: 

Sheriff Craig Owens:

  • Investments in public safety, including a new ballistic and stab-proof vest Community engagement and partnerships
  • Professionalizing the workforce and highlighting civilians and sworn personnel going through leadership development programs 
  • Accreditations, including the Sheriff’s Office being awarded the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) 

Assistant Chief Deputy Gina V. Hawkins spoke about the four divisions of Cobb County Sheriff’s Office:

  • Support Services
  • Adult Detention Center
  • Criminal Investigations
  • Uniformed/ Field Operations 

Assistant Chief Deputy Hawkins oversees the latter two divisions. This marked her first community briefing. 

Col. David Gallmon, Commander of the Support Services Division:

  • Purpose and Duties of Support Services

Shana Adams, Administrative Manager:

  • How the sheriff’s office supports staff through activities like Spirit Day & Family Fun Day
  • The upcoming Annual Awards Ceremony 

Capt. Huval, Background and Recruiting & Internal Affairs Commander:

  • Recruitment and retention numbers
  • 136 sworn and civilian personnel new hires in 2023  

Col. Michael A. Williams, Commander of the Adult Detention Center, LTC David Hilsman and LTC Becky Westenberger, Assistant Division Commanders:

  • Parenting 101 course and Anger Management Class offered at the Adult Detention Center
  • Purpose and duties of the Critical Response Team 

Col. Eric Yeager, Commander of Criminal Investigations Division:

  • Fugitive, Crime Scene Investigations, Drones, and Federal Task Force Officers.
  • He also mentioned that MCS Narcotics seized over 10+ million drugs this year 

Col Ryan Mehling, Commander of the Field Operations Division:

  • Courthouse Security, F.A.S.T. (Fugitive Apprehension and Support Team) Unit, K-9 Unit, the Motors Unit, and the SWAT Team. He also shared a tribute to K-9 Athos who passed away earlier this year.
  • Our state-of-the-art X-ray Machine, called the CTIX6040, located at the Superior Court checkpoint

We concluded the community briefing with Q&A from community members and Command Staff leaders.
