19 Aug Notice: In-Custody Death
The below notification was sent to local media at 7:54 a.m.
On Wednesday, Aug. 18, an ambulance was dispatched to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center after a detainee showed signs of bleeding while vomiting. His condition worsened prior to the arrival of the ambulance.
The detainee was booked into the ADC on Monday, Aug. 16. He informed personnel he suffered from Stage IV throat and stomach cancer and was placed in the infirmary for observation.
The detainee passed away Wednesday night at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing his name until the next of kin has been notified. The individual was transient and provided false information, making it difficult to contact his immediate family.
At the request of Sheriff Owens, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations is undergoing an external investigation. The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal investigation to ensure protocols were followed, including recommendations made from a recent independent audit of the Detention Center protocols.
