PRESS RELEASE

Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Assists with Arrest of Child Predator

On Tuesday, November 30th at approximately 11:00 am, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender and Criminal Investigations Unit assisted the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the arrest of Timothy Lyle Chappell, a convicted sexual predator.  Chappell was apprehended at the Hilltop Inn located at 3140 Moreland Avenue in DeKalb County.

Mr. Chappell, 48 yoa of Conley GA, was registered with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office as a sexually dangerous predator.  According to O.C.G.A. 42-1-12, a sexually dangerous predator is a sexual offender who was designated as a sexually violent predator between July 1, 1996 and June 30, 2006 or is determined by the Sexual Offender Registration Review Board to be at risk of perpetrating any future dangerous sexual offense.

Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren stated that Chappell was required by law to be equipped with a GPS monitoring system which the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office has been actively monitoring since August of 2010.  “Recently the Sex Offender Unit observed suspicious movement of Chappell throughout the metro area and notified local and federal authorities” said Warren.  “Due to the communication and cooperative efforts of several law enforcement agencies, a child predator, suspected of more criminal activity, was removed from the streets of our communities.”

Chappell is currently in Federal Custody with no bond and has been charged with Sex Trafficking of Children. The investigation continues and other charges may be forthcoming.
