COBB COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

PRESS RELEASE

On Thursday, September 2, 2010 Sheriff’s Investigators arrested two employees who have performed work on the new Courthouse.  Marina Escalante and Jose Antonio Chavarria have been charged with False Statements/Writing; Conceal Fact, Forgery and Identify Theft.  Both individuals were employed through a temporary service to provide clean-up services on the site. To date, ten individuals have been arrested for pre-existing outstanding criminal charges or, as in this case, for using fraudulent identification documents.

According to Sheriff's Office incident reports, Ms. Escalante, 37 years of age from Chiapas, Mexico was arrested Thursday morning at approximately 7:00 a.m. on the construction site of the new courthouse.  Mr. Chavarria, 32 years of age from Colon, Honduras, was arrested in Atlanta.

Sheriff Warren extended his appreciation to Turner Construction Company for their cooperation both in the investigation of these cases and their actions to help insure that those working on the construction project were doing so in compliance with the law.  According to Sheriff Warren, It was discovered during the criminal background check that Escalante and Chavarria were using fraudulent identification documents that gave them access to the courthouse construction site.   “In reviewing all of the arrests that resulted from this screening process, it is incredible to me that these individuals are so bold as to believe that they can violate the law and not face the consequences”, said Warren.

Ms. Escalanate and Mr. Chavarria are currently in custody at the Cobb County Jail with no bond.  Once their criminal charges have been completed in Cobb County, they will be released into the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
