COBB COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE PRESS RELEASE
Sheriff’s Arrest Two Courthouse Construction
Workers
On Monday, August 2, 2010 at
approximately 12:30 pm, two construction workers were arrested at the construction
site of the new Cobb County Courthouse. After Sheriff’s deputies ran criminal
background checks on courthouse workers, it was discovered that Derick
Santran Riley, 26, of Atlanta and Eddie
Richard Bell 24, of Stone Mountain had
outstanding warrants for their arrest.
According to Sheriff Neil Warren,
construction on the new courthouse has now reached the stage where it will be
connected to the existing judicial complex and the time has come to run
criminal history background checks on individuals working within the secured
facility, much like he did with construction workers building the new jail. “Occasionally some workers may have
outstanding warrants for aggravated assault, terroristic threats or other
charges” said Sheriff Warren. “We
have a responsibility to the public, the judicial system and the citizens of Cobb County
to make sure this site is both safe and secure.
As a result of the background checks, deputies
discovered that the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office had issued a Bench Warrant
for the arrest of Riley on charges of aggravated assault and driving without
a license. A Probation Violation
Warrant was also issued by DeKalb County for the arrest of Bell,
Both are currently in custody at the Cobb County Jail and are being
held without bond.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to
conduct criminal background checks on all workers and plans to have the
checks completed by August 20th.
