COBB COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

PRESS RELEASE

Sheriff comments on changes to 287(g) MOA

On Friday, July 10, 2009, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano Issued a Press Release announcing that the U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) would be entering into new agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies who participate in the 287(g) partnerships.  The intent of the new agreement is to address recommendations resulting from a General Accounting Office audit of the program.  The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office is still reviewing the new agreement but anticipants little impact from the change.

According to Sheriff Neil Warren the partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been an effective tool to identify and address illegal immigrants committing criminal offenses in Cobb County.  Over the past two years, the Cobb County Sheriff's Office has identified and transferred over 4,000 illegal immigrants to ICE custody after the offenders have satisfied local charges.

Sheriff Warren complemented ICE on their very effective efforts with the 287(g) program but noted that this Administration needs to make a serious effort to provide adequate funding for ICE to perform their duties related to securing the boarder and protecting the American public.
