On October 5, 2018, suspect Brian Kevin Young was wanted in Cobb County for Rape and Aggravated Child Molestation and was also under investigation in Paulding County, Georgia for same crimes in which a warrant was issued after further investigation. Investigator Seaman of the Fugitive Unit initially received the case and conducted an interview with the victim’s mother and was able to determine that Young had fled the area as he was aware of the current and impending charges. Investigator Seaman turned the case over to the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (SERFTF) for further investigation.
Investigator Davis and Investigator Woods interview Young’s girlfriend (victim’s mother) Bernice Averill again at her place of employment on October 15, 2018 and she admitted to communicating with Young since he had fled the metro Atlanta area and also confessed that he had her Wells Fargo Bank Card. Upon further investigation it was revealed that Young had used this card repeatedly on his flight from justice and every time he did a copy of the transaction was sent to Averill’s cellular phone. Investigator Davis contacted counterparts in the Los Angeles area at the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force (PSWRFTF) and relayed all the pertinent information including previous tag reader hits from the suspect’s vehicle in the Long Beach, California area, as well as addresses of friends and associates in the area.
Assistance was requested from the Fraud Unit on October 16, 2018 in drafting documents and contacting financial institutions to further the fugitive investigation and narrow the scope of the search. Investigator Duncan and Investigator Gravely immediately jumped into action and secured additional information vital to the investigation. It was determined that Young had assumed the identity of his brother who passed away in June of 2018 and opened credit accounts in his brother’s name.
Investigator Davis received a location for the suspect’s vehicle from a tag reader hit on October 17, 2018 and contacted the Marshals with the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force. The vehicle was located and surveillance was initiated. It was determined that Young was sleeping in the vehicle and the vehicle was boxed in and Young was taken into custody without further incident.
