Colonel Lewis (Lew) Alder began his law enforcement career in 1971 with the Atlanta Police Department where he served as patrolman and detective until 1975. From 1975 to 1980, Lew served with the Georgia State Crime Commission as a law enforcement specialist. Lew has served in Cobb County since 1980 as the Administrative Division Commander in the Sheriff’s Office, the Warden of the County Correctional Institute, and the Commander of the Sheriff’s Office Detention Division. Lew holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University.

General Information
The Jail is primarily a pretrial detention facility and is the largest inmate holding facility operated under the auspices of the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office. The Jail encompasses approximately 11 acres under roof and has a total bed capacity of 1,979. In 2003, approximately 39,000 adult offenders (17 years of age and older as mandated by state law) were processed through this facility. The average daily inmate population during 2003 was approximately 2,030.
